BAIKONUR

Байконур

The Baikonur Cosmodrome is a spaceport operated by Russia within Kazakhstan. Located in the Kazakh city of Baikonur, it is the largest operational space launch facility in terms of area.
All Russian crewed spaceflights are launched from Baikonur.

On October 30, 1992 at 7:56 p.m., a Proton rocket was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This rocket had been designed by the artists Andora, Jury Leidermann and the writer Chingiz Aitmatov. Ludwig Rauch photographed this project from the beginning to the launch of the rocket.

During the three weeks he spent on site in the assembly hall, Rauch used his 4x5 inc. plate camera to portray the people who planned, designed, assembled, built, guarded and looked after the rocket.
The series is titled “Per aspera ad astra”.
