After all, art is also there for the dark foreboding, for the exaggeration, for the warning, for the signs on the wall...
And New York is not yet flooded. America is not destroyed, no digital army is attacking the city, no oil slicks are floating on the Hudson, beautiful and deadly.
But anyone who sees the images of burnt Los Angeles today, who remembers the floods in New Orleans, who experiences the triumph of AI, the accelerating climate change and the accelerating lies, can no longer recognize a dystopia in “Maybe tomorrow”.
It all began with a great love, for Ludwig Rauch, who was in New York for the first time after leaving the small GDR in 1989 and could hardly put his happiness into pictures, and this feeling of freedom and confidence. The images of 9/11 stayed with him. They stuck in his memory and recurred in his dreams. Ludwig Rauch traveled to New York again and again, visiting Ground Zero with his camera. Photographed the hole, in the ground, in his heart, photographed his fear, his premonitions.
The picture cycle “Maybe tomorrow” was created between 2017 and 2019.
